Notes of a cornfield communist

CLR James once said the rich are only defeated when running for their lives. The shock value of this statement does not undermine its truth. Every wave of struggle leaves a residual impact: a residue of reforms and a residue of class consciousness in among the working class. The reforms come from a ruling class found reeling on its heels, utterly concerned that tomorrow it won't just be the downtown that burns but the whole rich neighborhood. Reforms from the ruling class come from a desperate attempt to reassert control over the unruly population. When fires are ranging they will be willing to "listen with both ears" and will feign a similar outrage. But it is only a matter of time before they regroup and reassert dominance (hegemony) both ideologically and militarily.
